The catalogue for ‘Bacon’s Eye, with works on paper attributed to Frances Bacon from the Barry Joule Archive’. 144pp, 100 images.
The catalogue is divided into two main sections: Bacon’s sketch book and a collection of some of Bacon’s inspirational newscuttings, which he has torn, painted on and scratched into. The typography of the catalogue and masthead to the exhibition title was also torn, folded and scratched. There is an introductory essay by Mark Sladen and a conversation between Sladen and Joule, Bacon’s handyman, driver and friend, who revealed the material some years after Bacon’s death.
As well as designing, typesetting and overseeing the print of this publication, we art-directed the photography, arranging and shooting a collection of cuttings for each page to retain the natural shadows and scale of the work. The large format was derived from this.
